dana, dana, dana, you can't keep repeating a lie. i have never, ever -- >> it's not a lie. i just pointed out a fact. >> i have never, ever, ever said -- dana, dana -- >> i'll change my tone on that. >> my point -- let me just correct one thing before you answer. i have never, ever said that an american cannot have a firearm at home to defend themselves and their family. i don't believe they shouldn't be able to. >> you are against semiautomatics. that's why i point that out. i don't know what a military style is. back to the question that you asked me. this is how i look at it. i'm a little bit -- full confession. so long as this decision is being made with the goal of strengthening the military and not based on any sort of politically correct motivations. that's what i'm wondering with this. i know that the order that panetta gave is unclear. "the wall street journal" just came out with a story earlier this evening saying that women may not be able to be part of infantry but we know women already serve in combat operations as mr. crowley said. we've had women killed in ac

dana can tell you better than i but she's busy right now, obviously. the problem in the senate is that there are a lot of democrat from republican leaning so-called red states that basically have to walk the plank to take that vote because they have so many sportsmen, hunters who use it for legitimate purposes who don't like the idea of a government trying to take their guns away. and then move over to house of representatives, it's controlled by republicans, unlike 1994 when the house was controlled by democrats and even then the gun ban passed on a very close vote. so this proposal, frankly, has a very tough road to hoe and it may be that if they put something out there and try to encourage people who support gun rights to go ahead and vote for it, they will end up with something that they can sell politically to the country even though it might not be able to get to the congress. people say go after the ammunition or go after stopping people who are mentally ill from getting guns, do some things that are a little bit easier to get agreement on. >> a

thanks very much, dana, for that. and kate has some new information about a story. >> a very interested day in this convoluted tale, as heisman trophy runner-up, manti te'o, is trying to explain to the world why he lied about falling in love with woman who doesn't exist. te te'o's extended interview about the scam just aired with katie couric. he was very emotional at tiles, george. >> kate, it was an interesting interview. at first, he insisted that he did not lie about it. then he backed off that a bit and admitted that he did, kind of, sort of. but throughout the interview with katie couric, he insisted that he really believed that his girlfriend was real. that is, until he realized that he had been duped. then he didn't know what to say about it. in his first televised interview since the scandal broke, notre dame star linebacker manti te'o spoke to katie couric about the online girlfriend he'd never met face to face, a woman we now know never existed. >> manti, did you have any involvement in creating this scam?

dana bash is live in washington. let's talk about dianne feinstein's props first. she's going to be holding a bushmasterer? >> reporter: i'm not sure if she'll be holding it. she might. she will have more than one assault weapon and she's going to have them on display. there you see the bushmaster ar-15. that is was, of course, the kind of weapon used in the newtown shootings. but the reason she is going to do this, i'm told, is to show specifically her fellow democrat, of which there are half a dozen or more that want to do little if anything to change the assault weapon laws, that you don't need these kinds of guns in the average of ordinary people. that is likely the argument she is going to make. again, it's going to be aimed at her fellow democrats resistant to this. but she is going to have a lot of different people with her to make this argument. this is the unveiling of the premier key legislation she promised to put out at the beginning of congress right after newtown. we are expecting to have quite a show when she comes up in about an hour. >> just so peo
